The documentary film THE ROOTS OF SERBIAN MEDICINE is part of the series “People and Events” that was initiated in order to save from oblivion crucial moments in Serbia’s history, culture and traditions, along with the people who made them happen. This time the story starts in the Middle Ages and ends after the foundation of the Faculty of Medicine in Belgrade - at that time the first faculty in Europe that had a chair on the history of medicine. Thus we learn that the first mention of the word “medicine” among the Serbs using today’s meaning dates from the time of the Great Parish Clerk Stefan Nemanja as the head of the state in 1168, when the political environment in Serbian lands became stable. Starting in the 12th century in medieval Serbia, just as in the Europe of that time, the methods of Hippocrates, Galen, Aristides and other ancient physicians were applied in practice, and all branches of teaching medicine at the time were represented.
