I have written several books about my "early sorrows". My entire childhood is an illusion, an illusion that feeds my imagination.
The period of childhood has a powerful common denominator that is the same for all people regardless of their race and where they live. But there are also differences, those that are fateful and determine who will become what in life. Without these "troublesome differences" arising from my Jewish origin and without the misfortune of my wartime childhood, I most certain would not have become a writer.
There is nothing accidental in a writer's fate, not even the place where he was born. I was born in Subotica, a town that is called Szabadka in Hungarian. This town on the Yugoslav-Hungarian border attests to the municipality of languages, origins, histories, cultures. All of this marked my later life.
