"I seek depth in my painting. The soul of the theme is decisive. What is naive painting, what are academic and lay painters, painters with instinct or a pure heart - I don't give it any thought. I don't know what they mean by that. I have always left it to the experts and only made sure that I painted according to my thoughts and inspirations. They say that my paintings are full of life - some happy, playful, others sad. With some of my paintings I want to make people happy, with others I want to make them think. I want to shout to them: people, be happy, because you're alive! I don't know what they think and feel, but my creativity fulfills me. Otherwise I couldn't paint." These words only reveal here and there an uncompromising artist who doesn't flirt with reality and trends he's a bit of a philosopher, a bit of a poet, a man who is deeply connected to the difficult life of the peasant farmer and the endless Banat plain. With his great talent and powerful artistic imagination, Martin Jonas has become one of the most important names in modern world naive painting.
