Jovan Jovanovic Zmaj is undoubtedly one of the brightest fated poets from our area. A poet from the Romantic period, bringing memories of the beauty and diligence of the nineteenth century, enduring in space and time like a word of promise that is transmitted from generation to generation.
His first poem dating from 1849 were published in a review signed with the pseudonym Ossian after the legendary Irish bard who wrote folk ballads. The motto of the poems was taken from the verses of Russian poet Homyakov: "I dreamed I was poet!"
With his first published verses, Jovan Jovanovic Zmaj's dream came true.
At the very beginning of his lyrical pursuits Zmaj wrote poetry for children. It has been write that they were a sideback. But in 1890s, he almost completely devoted himself to children, writing naïve poetry which is what poetry for children was called at that time. As Romanticism wanted, Zmaj took the best qualities of romantic inspiration and transferred them o poetry for the youngest one.
