A great number of choral songs and tunes loved and sang by individuals, whole generations, people that we may remember, are the symbols, the ornaments the sources of the Serbian secular and spiritual music.
Among these everlasting choral tunes one may easily identify those of many composers, in particular songs signed by Stevan Mokranjac. This great composer is equally appreciated for his "Rukoveti" (Garlands) - songs for choirs, his "Opela" (Requiems), or his vocal pieces. Always specific, original, his life seems to be in this everlasting music perpetuating his fame and name. The significance and the value of the music composed by Stevan Mokranjac are in his treatment of the folklore "Melos" as a substance for his artistic work. With the intuition and taste of an authentic artist he knew how to find just measure in this synthesis of folklore musical leitmotivs and the inspirational composing techniques. With this rational attitude towards the original folklore music, romantically idealized in the case of his predecessors and even the contemporaries, Mokranjac became a composer whose work witnessed the decline of romanticism an the rise of realistic nationally oriented spirit.
